Abstract Empagliflozin is a relatively new drug that, as an inhibitor of the sodiumglucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2), causes increased urinary glucose excretion and thus contributes to improved glycemic control, better glucose metabolism, reduced glucotoxicity and insulin resistance.

This review is an effort to address the enduring challenges faced by empagliflozin pharmacotherapy against a variety of diseases, including diabetes, heart failure, and cancer. We identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) about empagliflozin from eight databases. We analysed the pharmacodynamics, adverse effects (AEs), and pharmacokinetics of empagliflozin at different doses. We identified 8264 articles, of which 23 RCTs with 10518 patients were included.
