Landscape-scale conservation planning is urgent given the extent of anthropogenic land-use change and its pervasive impacts on Earths biodiversity. However, such efforts are hindered by disagreements over the effects of habitat fragmentation on biodiversity that have persisted since the mid-1970s.

We argue that studies of life-history traits and population dynamics should incorporate spatial characteristics of fragmentation (e.g., landscape configuration and habitat patch characteristics) in order to better understand how physiology constrains an individual's allocation strategy.
